I don’t know about you, but my September flew by in a flash. I didn’t manage to write a single blog post. The month began with our return to France, the first weekend of September. We hot-footed it down to Castelnaudary, leaving at an ungodly time on Saturday morning, and arriving Sunday evening.
Our youngest son was due to arrive the next day with his girlfriend, driving up from Barcelona. Although they’d been together for over two years, Emily had never visited the French house. We couldn’t wait to show her some of the area’s delights. The icing on the proverbial cake was that our eldest son and his wife were joining us at the end of the week!
Having two extra pairs of hands made it much easier to finish opening up the house and getting the garden and pool ready. This isn’t as daunting as it may sound, because most of our visitors are happy to use the sit-on mower! I think the pool looks particularly tempting in the photo below.

You can see the plane trees along the Canal du Midi at the bottom of the garden. I imagine it won’t be long until they are felled. If you’re interested in discovering why these trees are being cut down, I suggest you read this post! Where have all the plane trees gone? – Fancying France

Part of the front garden, at sunset, after a return ‘tidy up’!

During the family visit, we had lunch in the Cité of Carcassonne and visited Toulouse. I didn’t take a single photo; I was living in the moment! We were blessed with beautiful weather throughout the family visit, which went by far too soon.
However, I still managed to fit in some reading in September. I loved both books pictured below and would recommend them highly. The Correspondent is set in the States; The Artist in Provence is set in France.

I watched very little television in September, but I was delighted to learn that one of my favourite French series, Call My Agent, was returning as a film/movie. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations, and I didn’t even watch it to the end.

I hope you enjoyed reading about my ‘simple’ September, and that you had a lovely September, too.

Hi June
Was trying to put in a comment but couldn’t as the ‘block’ says there is an error and you can’t write anything. Lovely to hear of your visit. We have friends living nearby in Toulouse and Moissac. They came together and visited us whilst we were in Dungeness! And while there I read so many books and did not watch television once.
I think both September and October is going by in flash!
Very best Penny

Hello Penny
Thank you so much for your comment. I’m always pleased to hear from you. There is a problem with commenting on WordPress at the moment. One of my other favourite bloggers (!) has written about it here: https://hughsviewsandnews.com/2026/10/15/wordpress-com-comment-problems-heres-whats-going-on/
I remember that you had friends in SW France. How lovely that they visited you in Dungeness! I always read your posts, even if I don’t always comment.

I have “The Correspondent” on my digital TBR and I’ve only heard good things about it. For me, too, it seemed like September went by too quickly. Autumn is my favorite. I hope you enjoy the rest of the season, June! 🍂

Let me know what you think of ‘The Correspondent’ if you can. I’m also an Autumn lover – the colours, temperatures, food… Thanks for your comment.

I love to ‘live in the moment’ too, June. I often go out on long walks without my phone. Being tech-free is invigorating.
You have a lovely place in France. It must have been brilliant to have both your sons and their partners stay.
Thanks for the mention in earlier comments. I’m very flattered.
And now I’m asking, ‘Where is October going so fast?’ When the clocks go back next weekend, the summer heatwaves will seem like a very long time ago.
Enjoy the rest of Autumn.

Hello Hugh!
Thanks for dropping by and commenting.
I have to agree that October is going by equally fast! I never look forward to the clocks going back, but after a late afternoon dog walk, particularly if it’s cold, there’s something rather comforting about closing the curtains and hibernating!
Autumn is probably my favourite season.

Autumn is my favourite season too, June. And with the first autumn and winter storm on the way, I will certainly look forward to hibernating.

September in France sounds lovely especially with the children and their partners coming to join you to help set up the house. Thanks for joining in with #pocolo.
I’ve already been adventuring in October in the campervan and will be off again next week and the week beyond.

I do always try to live in the moment, but sometimes it’s easier said then done!
