I’m unsure if this is a family tradition, but we have been doing this for at least twenty-five years. We have had a family holiday, usually in February, in Gran Canaria. We missed a couple of years because of Covid and on two occasions when our sons couldn’t join us.
It all began when both boys seemed to have never-ending throat, chest, ear infections and colds. I decided we needed some winter sun for health reasons.
This was in the nineties, before booking on line was the norm. I telephoned a holiday company, I can’t remember which one, requesting a last minute sunny and warm winter break! This was on a Friday for the February half-term beginning on Monday. I said we would go anywhere and outlined our minimal budget!
The helpful travel agent asked if we were happy to fly from any airport and stay in any accommodation. I said ‘yes’! So we ended up in Gran Canaria, flying from Bristol and staying in two adjacent studio flats.
You might be wondering why we like Gran Canaria so much? In 2022, I wrote a post that answers the question:
Lovely,I’ve not visited Gran Canaria so perhaps should think about doing so for a winter treat.

I haven’t visited the other Canary Islands but we like the variety of Gran Canaria. Once Bloganuary is over, I’m looking forward to catching up with your Californian travels. Have a lovely weekend!
