The dictionary defines communication as ‘the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium’. Online communication is another medium that has become popular over time. As a teacher/trainer I considered myself a good communicator, a vital aspect of my career.
However, I still remember when online communication wasn’t a thing! We had to communicate through letters and landline telephones. I had penfriends from around the world, and receiving a letter from abroad was always exciting!
When I went travelling, my parents had no idea where I was or what I was doing. I sent them postcards and letters and called them from public telephones whenever I could find one. The freedom for me was fantastic, but it wasn’t great for my parents! Nowadays, should we wish to, we can track our children. This might be reassuring, but I wonder if this isn’t great for our offspring.
As a blogger, online communication is what I do, and I love making connections with other bloggers. With friends and family, I use WhatsApp. I also use this for group messaging my Zumba and dog walking groups. I use email, SMS, Zoom and Face Time, Pinterest and Instagram. I dabble in Facebook and X occasionally!
However, my preferred way of communicating is not online but face to face, talking! Speaking on the phone is better than not talking, but I like to see people’s faces!
Nevertheless, if online communication disappeared, I would miss it a great deal, despite the negative aspects of social media.

Decades ago before digital communications were invented I used to have several pen pals around the world and I still look back to those exciting days when a letter bearing a foreign stamp would drop onto my doormat. Mobile phones, What’s App messaging, blogging and emails have transformed the way we communicate and I have embraced the change wholeheartedly whilst still having fond memories of days gone by. We still have a landline phone but it’s never used and it just receives the occasional dust as I pass by!

I think, particularly as we get older, it is important to embrace technology. It is a fantastic for the brain cells and can help to counter loneliness and isolation. I like the image of you giving your landline a dust as you pass by, Marion! Sometimes I forget that we have a landline…

I too always appreciate a face-to face conversation, but when it is not possible online is good!
