I love language, and today’s prompt got me thinking – probably too much! There are many words that set my teeth on edge but how to select just one?

Jargon – When I was a consultant, the amount of jargon that would exit people’s mouths during meetings was mind-blowing Fortunately, I can’t remember most of it!

Here’s a list of annoying phrases:

  • Blue sky thinking – not a chance in the UK at the moment
  • It is what it is – obviously
  • Thinking out of the box – I’m not even in a box
  • At the end of the day – why use six words when you can use one? e.g. ultimately
  • With all due respect – meaning with no respect whatsoever
  • At this moment in time – what?
  • I, personally… who else?
  • Literally – ‘It’s so hot. I’m literally melting’. No, you’re not, you’re not an ice cream
  • Let’s park that – Let’s not. I am not a vehicle
  • No offense, but… Usually followed by something offensive

I have wandered from the original prompt but enjoyed writing this post. I may well return to this topic.

Of course, I have to admit that some of these phrases may have exited from my mouth in the past!

I’d love to know any words or phrases you find annoying.
