What does ‘patriotic’ mean? It’s a word that is open to interpretation.
Time to turn to the dictionary! The Oxford Dictionary states, ‘having or expressing devotion to and vigorous support for one’s country.’
I am patriotic when it comes to sports. I will support a British or English player or team.
There are many aspects of our culture – the language, literature and history – which I hold dear. However, I also appreciate the culture of other nations, and I consider myself European.
Patriotism has historically meant a love for and devotion to one’s country of origin. What concerns me is when patriotism is confused with nationalism.
According to the dictionary, ‘nationalism is having or expressing strong identification with one’s own nation and vigorous support for its interests, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations’.
And with that thought, I will finish this post…

Patriotism is an interesting one! I can’t say I’m very patriotic at all. I always split my love and support between Germany & GB when it comes to sports and Eurovision.
Are the French quite patriotic? I recently visited Le Havre and spotted the French flag flying at the town hall with, ‘ Liberté, égalité, fraternité’ in gold underneath. It was a lovely sight!

In my experience, the French are very patriotic. Some of my French friends say that they are chauvinistic about their country and always laugh when I say I agree!

I think I was going the way you were going, June. I’m patriotic – proud of my country and roots, but not (I hope) blind to its faults. For most of us at peace in the UK, ‘nationalism’ is an anachronism. We are not ruled by an alien state or way of life, we are not threatened. We have no desire, or justification, to conquer a neighbour. Personally, I find nationalism in my country rather unpleasant – and it is certainly divisive. But we live in uncertain times, don’t we?

I couldn’t have put it better myself, Mike. I agree 100% with your comment, for which I thank you!
