We have just returned from celebrating my eldest son’s wedding in Porto. It was the most joyous occasion, and I had the privilege and pleasure of walking my son down the ‘aisle.’

My son’s wife is Brazilian, and weddings are massive in Brazil. The wedding perfectly blended British and Brazilian culture. It is no understatement to say that Brazilians love to party – we danced until two in the morning, although the ‘youngsters’ continued long after us! And the food, where do I start?! I could write a whole post on the delicious and varied cuisine, including a five-course sit-down dinner.
Along with gaining a daughter, we have acquired an extensive Brazilian family. The evening before the wedding, family members from both sides enjoyed a wonderful dinner at a beachside restaurant. This occasion broke the ice, and I was able to use some of my limited Portuguese!
As for Porto, I was delighted to spend a week there as my previous weekend visit (see below) had been a taster of everything on offer.
We rented an Airbnb, except the night after the wedding when the immediate family stayed at the venue. Six of us, friends and family, were in an excellently located house in Vila Nova De Gaia, a city in its own right. It is separated from Porto by the Douro River, and it takes just five minutes to walk across the famous Dom Luís I Bridge.

It is easy to travel around Porto. Along with walking – and we walked a lot – we travelled by the following modes of transport:
- trams
- metro
- hop on – hop off bus
- cable car
- Rabelo boat
- funicular
In my next Porto post, I will go into more detail about the places we visited. If you have already been fortunate enough to visit Porto, did you love it as much as I did? I’d be interested to know.

Oh wow, what a wedding. It sounds amazing! And actually lucky you as both my children have long-term partners and children but no weddings so far. One day – I might be able to wear a hat! But not sure about that.
It actually sounded as though it was an idyllic day – congratulations to the happy couple X

It was an amazing day and it brought home to me how important weddings are to many Brazilians! No one wore a hat but it was very hot! I will pass on your congratulations and thank you for your comment x

How beautiful. The wedding looks fabulous and your dress absolutely gorgeous. It suits you beautifully with the pink shoes. Did you buy it in France? I’m so pleased everything went to plan and that you now have an extended Brazilian family!

Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Marion. I bought the dress in the UK. It’s silk and has a v back, not to mention the subtle but unusual pattern! The pink shoes were espadrilles and were so comfortable, I was able to wear them all day and evening, including for dancing! We’d love to visit Brazil – let’s see what happens!

Oh my, what a glorious occasion and a perfect setting for a wedding. Interestingly, I was recently looking through photos of my daughter’s wedding (nine years ago!) and they both had eight attendants each. Most people thought that was a bit excessive; but hey; why not include all your friends and family! I hope your son and his new bride have a very long and happy marriage. Congratulations!! 🥂🎊

Thank you for your lovely comment! There were ten bridesmaids which seemed a lot to me at the time, but I understand now that is not so unusual in Brazil/Portugal!

Thank you so much for the kind words! I’m not sure if they’re cockatiels or parakeets! They were quite subtle. I’ll have to see if I can get a close up to show them in more detail 😊 i will pass on your best wishes. Have a good weekend.

So nice when you’ve known your son’s friends from school days. It was the same at my son’s wedding last year. It looks a happy event and Porto is a lovely city. I’m hoping to be back there in November.

It was lovely to catch up with my son’s school friends; some of whom I have known since the age of four! I have enjoyed seeing them develop into the fine young men they have become. I have fallen under the spell of Porto and would happily return for a third visit. I have always loved Portugal and was even suggesting to my husband that we sell our place in France and buy in Portugal!
Your posts about Brittany were very interesting, particularly re: St Mont St Michel and Nantes. I’m trying to catch up with all my blog reading now!

I usually try to read a few blogs while I’m away because it’s almost impossible to catch up otherwise, but I don’t post. There’s always a half hour or so when my husband’s still asleep 🤣🩵

Thank you and I will pass on the congratulations! Glad you like the parakeets or are they cockatiels? 😂
Porto is definitely worth a visit, I have now been there twice and I would happily return.

Best wishes to the beautiful and elegant couple as well as their new family!
I didn’t spot parakeets until you mentioned it. You look fantastic. Your red shoes and clothing look great together and very stylish.
Portugal is a place I have never been to, but I’m curious to hear stories about it.
Have a wonderful day!
