I’ve been fortunate to experience several memorable road trips. They were all extra special but for different reasons. Three of these trips stand out for me. When I got married, the second time, we spent three weeks travelling down the French west coast, from Calais to Biarritz. We booked the first night’s accommodation in a château, but the rest of the trip was left to fate.

The second stand-out road trip was from San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey via Santa Cruz. As my husband was working in California, the whole family experienced this fantastic journey. Our sons were young, and their main memory is of the sea otters in the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

In 2019, we spent three weeks in South Africa. The first week was spent in Cape Town, before hiring a car to continue our adventures. Over two weeks, we drove the Garden Route, following the majestic coastline. We then headed inland to visit Oudtshoorn, ostrich capital of the world, as well as the famous Cape Winelands.
