Are you familiar with Walter Presents? If you love world drama and aren’t averse to subtitles, you should have a look at this handpicked selection, curated by Walter Iuzzolino, an Italian television producer. His choices have helped to keep me sane during lockdown and all tastes are catered for. I think immersing oneself in a series from a different culture and country, not to mention language, is a brilliant form of escapism.

I was first drawn to Walter Presents, on All 4 UK, by the variety of French (what else?!) series to view. I think I have watched most (but not all) of the French programmes available. Walter recently ran a Twitter poll with the aim of discovering which French series was viewers top favourite. The result was ‘Vanished by the Lake’ which I can heartily recommend.

There are so many other brilliant box sets, to binge, from across the globe. But how to choose? If you are a fan of ‘Scandi Noir’ and enjoyed shows like The Bridge, The Killing and Borgen, you will find plenty to watch. One of my favourites is ‘Before we die’, an edge of your seat thriller, from Sweden.

The series are not purely thrillers. One of my top 10 – if I had one – would be Ride Upon the Storm. There are two series of this very original Danish drama which focuses on a family of priests. The acting was outstanding and I felt emotionally invested in the characters; even the music is great! I was actually bereft when it finished!

As well as French and Scandinavian programmes, I have also enjoyed Belgian, Dutch and Polish series. When I have the time (!) I can also sample German, Spanish, Brazilian and Hungarian series. There is no shortage of choice!
