Today is National Red Wine Day – apparently. As I had no idea, I decided to conduct some research, and discovered that National Red Wine Day originated in the United States.
It was created in 2014 by the American “Queen of Holidays,” Jace Shoemaker-Galloway. Who knew? Not me, obviously, but I wonder if any of my lovely American readers are familiar with this event.
This date isn’t celebrated in France, but there is a Beaujolais Nouveau Day. This takes place on the third Thursday of November, when the first bottles of the new Beaujolais wine are released for sale. Another clever marketing ploy? Or am I too cynical?!
My thoughts returned to this post I shared some years ago…

Thanks, Joey! Oddly, I don’t drink much red wine in the summer…

Thanks to publicity by the Alliance Française de San Francisco, I believe Beaujolais Nouveau Day is celebrated more than Red Wine Day. (I do know Rosé Day is celebrated the last Friday in June!) Cheers! 🍷

Thanks, Darlene! I’ve celebrated the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau many times in France, but never Red Wine or Rosé day. It’s interesting to know that there are such days in the States.

As I only drink red wine (I dislike white wine), it’s National Red Wine Day every day for me, June. And Beaujolais Nouveau Day is big in the UK, especially here in Swansea, where people celebrate from lunch to the early hours of the following morning. Not even the pandemic in 2020 stopped the celebrations, although restrictions were in place on who you could sit with, etc.

I like the idea of every day being a National Red Wine Day for you, Hugh. I’ve experienced Nouveau Beaujolais in the UK and France, but I’ve been underwhelmed by the wine! I wonder why NBD is so popular in Swansea? Thanks for your comment.
