I love language, and today’s prompt got me thinking – probably too much! There are many words that set my teeth on edge but how to select just one?
Jargon – When I was a consultant, the amount of jargon that would exit people’s mouths during meetings was mind-blowing Fortunately, I can’t remember most of it!
Here’s a list of annoying phrases:
- Blue sky thinking – not a chance in the UK at the moment
- It is what it is – obviously
- Thinking out of the box – I’m not even in a box
- At the end of the day – why use six words when you can use one? e.g. ultimately
- With all due respect – meaning with no respect whatsoever
- At this moment in time – what?
- I, personally… who else?
- Literally – ‘It’s so hot. I’m literally melting’. No, you’re not, you’re not an ice cream
- Let’s park that – Let’s not. I am not a vehicle
- No offense, but… Usually followed by something offensive
I have wandered from the original prompt but enjoyed writing this post. I may well return to this topic.
Of course, I have to admit that some of these phrases may have exited from my mouth in the past!
I’d love to know any words or phrases you find annoying.

Hi June. I am a grammar nerd and I can’t abide it when people use ‘of’ instead of ‘with. There’s a whole series of cook books called ‘Bored of…. when it should be ‘Bored with….!!!!
Hoping this comment gets through!

Hello Penny. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, especially when you are busy dealing with your new blog, which I love.
Using ‘of’ instead of ‘with’ also drives me mad, as does the expression ‘off of’.
I am pleased that this comment hasn’t turned up in spam, as happened to several of your previous comments.
Happy Blogging!

I agree, but I treat most of the posts as an opportunity to have some fun and not to be taken too seriously!

I agree with your examples. Where do I start with the list of the ones I find annoying?!
I’m sorry for your loss – this has come into fashion during the past 30 years or so. I always feel it sounds rather distant and dismissive, even if the person doesn’t mean it like that.
My bad – why not say my fault?
By close of play – I don’t like the masculinity of this. Why not by the end of the day?
Hubster – this sounds terribly coy and more like a car accessory. Why not just say husband?
I could go on, but I think that’s enough!

There are many euphemisms used when talking about death. I think you don’t loose people, they die. That sound harsh but that wasn’t my intention.
My bad is popular with the younger generation, I believe!
I hadn’t thought about ‘By close of play’ – interesting.
Hubster – really?! Likewise hubbie.
Great comment – thank you!

Stakeholder…..which seems to mean anyone except the person who will end up paying for what the stakeholders come up with.
It rouses the wish to take a stake to the said stakeholders…

Stakeholder crops up all over the place these days. I like the idea of taking a stake to certain stakeholders!

Vaca rather than vacation, jelly rather than jealous; the list goes on! Just use the proper word. Funny, my daughter (who is a writer) and I were talking about this just the other day.

I’ve not heard vaca or jelly being used in that context. I have heard holibubs instead of holidays!

June, this is great. I have a long list of such useless words and phrases, hard to pick just one! How about “If I’m honest” or “To be honest”? People don’t seem to realize that those expressions imply that they’re usually *not* honest, that this time they’re telling the truth instead of lying to you like they usually do! ~ Jean | DelightfulRepast.com #PoCoLo

Thank you, Jean! That’s a great example of a useless phrase and one I hadn’t considered. I’ll be on the look out now! #PoCoLo
