This post was inspired by a December 2024 WordPress # dailyprompt. The original prompt asked ‘Which cities would you like to visit?’ It would fill pages if I listed all the cities I would like to explore! Hence, I decided to limit my choices by focussing on France. I looked at population numbers in France which are used to define a city.

I have been fortunate to visit many French cities over the years. My love affair with France began with Paris – where else? Recently I have grown to love Toulouse. Our house is about forty minutes from Toulouse and is often featured in this blog. One of my most popular posts was about a long weekend spent in Perpignan.
Other favourites French cities include include
- Tours
- Metz
- Grenoble
- Strasbourg
- Perpignan

Nevertheless, there are still some French cities that have escaped me! Including…
- Lyon
- Marseille
- Dijon
- Nîmes
- Avignon
I thought it would be interesting to experiment with an AI-generated image. I put ‘French cities’ into the search and this was the result:

What do you think?
Returning to the original prompt, I’d love to know which cities you would like to visit? Whether worldwide or closer to home. There are cities I have yet to discover here in the UK, as well as further afield.
I look forward to reading your recommendations!

Where I’d like to visit is an interesting question as I generally just explore where ever the army sends us! I’m in France next month visiting Le Havre, not a place that was ever on my list but I’m looking forward to it. I’m determined next time we travel via tunnel we’ll stop at Calais. It’s a place we’ve passed through so many times but never stopped to see!

I enjoy reading your posts about the different places you have lived. I think you make the most of wherever you happen to be! It’s years since I’ve been to Le Havre. I hope you blog about your visit! When I was teaching in London, we used to take our pupils on day trips to Calais. I’ve also stayed there en route to another part of France. There’s a lot more to see there than one might imagine.

Worldwide? Montevideo……when we moved from France I would have preferred Uruguay to Costa Rica…..but Higher Authority had fallen in love with CR!
In France, I liked Nantes very much and wish I had been able to return to Nimes.

I also like Nantes, although I imagine it’s changed since my last visit many years ago. and I’m hoping to visit Nîmes in the near future. Further afield, there are so many countries that I have yet to discover. Thanks for your comment.

Very interesting. I’ve obviously got a lot of exploring in France to do as I’ve not even visited one of the ten on your list!

Thanks for your comment, Marion. With the amount of travel you do, I’m not surprised you haven’t explored France! We haven’t been to our French house since the summer. Mr FF had a serious health issue (no details here!), which meant no travelling. It was such a shock and has made us think seriously about selling the house. However, we’re returning to Gran Canaria in March, with both sons and their partners for some much-needed r&r! June x

Oh dear. I’m so sorry to hear about your husband’s illness but it’s good to learn that he’s now well on the road to recovery. It will be lovely to enjoy the warmth of Gran Canaria with both your sons and their partners. Another destination that I’m yet to visit. Take care. Marion

our daughter used to live in Lyon so I know it reasonably well. I’d like to return to Dinan with it’s medieval architecture. I’d also like to go to PAris, but only with a French guide

I have no idea how Lyon has escaped my attention, thus far. Dinan is a beautiful place, and Paris was where it all began for me! Thanks for your comment 😊

Bordeaux is on our short list for France! If you haven’t been to Nantes yet, I highly recommend it. Such an arty, whimsical town.

I’m sure you’d love Bordeaux. We were staying at St. Emillion when we visited the city. I’ve been to Nantes a few times, but not recently. I would love to return. Thanks for your interest in this post!

Hmm… I was thinking maybe Bordeaux this year, but you know when somewhere doesn’t quite capture the imagination? We can fly there from Faro, but I’m half fancying Lyon instead. Also a direct flight. I’ve wanted to visit Bilbao and the northern coast of Spain for quite a few years, and I’m desperate to get to Sicily. Neither are particularly easy.
Sorry to hear about your husband. Health issues can turn everything on their head, can’t they? Enjoy Gran Canaria. I really liked Puerto Mogan.

I have visited Bordeaux when we were staying in St Emilion, but I had a stomach upset which coloured my experience!
Sometimes, choosing where to visit is related to accessibility. I loved Porto but have yet to visit Lisbon. Sicily has been on my travel list for a long time.
We’ve been visiting Gran Canaria for over twenty years and are still discovering new aspects of the island !

Brittany is a gorgeous place to live. I have happy memories of family holidays in the Carnac area when my sons were small. Also, as a teacher of French, taking pupils on visits to Rennes and staying in St Cast. Lovely memories. You are blessed to live in Brittany! Thanks for your comment.

There are so many! Starting closer to home, Lyon and Strasbourg have to be on the list. Further away, Budapest and St Petersburg, but for the moment, I don’t think I’d be very welcome in the latter.
