I was first alerted to this by a recent article from the BBC. Was it April Fool’s Day, I wondered? Does a ‘scratch and sniff’ stamp exist, let alone in France?
I have previously blogged about the popularity of the baguette in France. Since writing that post, the baguette gained UNESCO heritage status in 2022. I wasn’t surprised that there should be a stamp in honour of the baguette, but the ‘scratch and sniff element’ did amaze me.
Time for some research! I headed off to the website for La Poste; although there was much detail about the baguette, I could not see any reference to the scratch and sniff element. This was verified by a French friend who looked at me as if I was mad when I told him about the stamp.
Further research led me to Le Parisien which announced that that ‘la Poste met en vente depuis ce vendredi un timbre à l’effigie d’une baguette et à l’odeur d’une boulangerie’. The Post Office are releasing a stamp with an image of a baguette and the smell of a boulangerie’.
This stamp was launched on May 16, Saint Honoré Day. St Honoré is the patron saint of bakers and pastry chefs. I wrote about him here: https://fancyingfrance.com/2019/05/15/happy-st-honore-day/
The stamps went on sale the next day, reminding me that I must pop into the Post Office to see if I can purchase some of these stamps and test if they are ‘sniff and scratch’. Watch this space!

I read about this and sort of wondered what the point is! I suppose it’s a way of getting people to buy stamps out of curiosity. La Poste is suffering like all postal services from competition from the internet.

If nothing else, it’s clever marketing?! It’s the same issue with the post in the UK and, I imagine, everywhere else. Thanks for dropping by.

Another blogger who lives in France commented that La Poste is struggling to survive. I guess it’s a clever marketing ploy. Thanks for your comment!

When I saw this stamp pop up on Instagram, I thought it was an AI-generated image. Glad it’s real! I look forward to your impressions of its scratch and sniff element. I love the smell of fresh baked bread! 🥖

I haven’t seen the stamp on Instagram; I’ll take a look. Yes, fresh-baked bread has to be one of the best smells! Thanks for your comment.

When I called into La Poste last week, the lady at the counter realised one item I wanted to send was a card and asked if I’d like a “special stamp” as opposed to the usual sticker… Yes please, I replied. Sadly, I didn’t get the baguette option (and stupidly didn’t think to ask!!) but I was offered the “J.O.” – Olympic Games stamp – they are quite fancy!

I stopped in at La Poste today and bought the last carnet of these special stamps they had available. There’s no scratch and sniff element, but they work for international mailings which is all that really matters to me.

Understood; the scratch and sniff is a marketing ploy, I imagine. Thanks for your comment!
