Considering the current state of the world, it might be easier to blog about ‘what doesn’t make a good leader?’ Anyway, I will follow the prompt.
Over the years, I have worked with some talented and inspirational leaders. Unfortunately, I’ve also encountered some who are not suited to the role, to put it politely!
I believe to be a good leader, you need to show the following attributes and qualities:
- Clear and effective communication
- Open minded
- Positive and encouraging
- Respectful
- Empathetic
- Build relationships
- Lead by example
- Never stop learning
- Decisive
- Trustworthy
- Excellent role model
- Motivate and inspire
This list isn’t exclusive! Perhaps you have some suggestions to add?

Sense of humour, especially if you are in Education!

Absolutely. How could I have omitted that? Definitely in Education but also in some other jobs I have had over the years. Perhaps a sense of humour is a life skill?!

Be prepared to take hard decisions when it comes to team members who are not pulling their weight, once you have checked that there are no underlying reasons for that. From experience, working with people like that is a real drag on work satisfaction.
