I’ve been fortunate to experience several memorable road trips. They were all extra special but for different reasons. Three of these trips stand out for me. When I got married, the second time, we spent three weeks travelling down the French west coast, from Calais to Biarritz. We booked the first night’s accommodation in a château, but the rest of the trip was left to fate.
The second stand-out road trip was from San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway to Monterey via Santa Cruz. As my husband was working in California, the whole family experienced this fantastic journey. Our sons were young, and their main memory is of the sea otters in the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
In 2019, we spent three weeks in South Africa. The first week was spent in Cape Town, before hiring a car to continue our adventures. Over two weeks, we drove the Garden Route, following the majestic coastline. We then headed inland to visit Oudtshoorn, ostrich capital of the world, as well as the famous Cape Winelands. Those are all special trips! I would love to do the Garden Route, and west coast highway is a classic. The honeymoon sounds wonderful! My husband isn’t especially keen on distance driving and I don’t drive so that limits things. I always had a hankering for a campervan but they are anathema to Mick. We always intended to make the trip from the UK to Portugal overland, as many of our friends have done, but it hasn’t happened yet. Living in the north east didn’t help.

We share the driving on all trips. When we drive to Castelnaudary, we take two days and stay overnight in a hotel in Tours. We also have the dog to consider. We’re not getting any younger but as we both enjoy driving and are still confident drivers, there’s no problem. I think we have to be realistic and accept that we won’t be able to drive such distances for ever! In a previous life, I had a VW Camper Van which I loved. We have talked about investing in a motorhome but I’m really not sure about that!

They take up a lot of space! Mick has driven since he was 17 and used to love it. He’s 70 now and not so keen. I had a failed attempt in my 40s and pregnant, and gave up after my dismal test 😢🩷
