Ever since completing the Bloganuary Challenge, I look occasionally at the WordPress Daily Writing prompt. Sometimes I think they look quite interesting and other times they leave me cold.
A little while ago, this was the prompt of the day: List your top 5 favourite fruits.
Nothing particularly challenging, thought-provoking, nor interesting about this prompt – or so I thought! However, for some unknown reason, I kept thinking about my top 5 favourite fruits. I could easily name my top 15, if not more, only 5 proved to be more difficult.
I love fruit. I have fruit every single day. My favourite dessert is fresh fruit salad – I hope no one is thinking ‘boring’! In the winter, I add fruit to my porridge, and in the summer I have at least three different varieties with natural yogurt, but ask me to name just five favourites that’s when I struggle. Perhaps this is a case of over-thinking?!
There are some fruits that I eat almost every day, bananas and apples for example. However, they are not in my top 5. They are readily available and I like them but there are other fruits that I enjoy more! Let’s cut to the chase…
In no particular order (Is this allowed?!) my five favourite fruits are:
- Blackberries
- Melons
- Strawberries
- Nectarines
- Lemons
There is a need for some clarification. There is one type of melon of which I am not a fan. I’m thinking of watermelons.
Some of my lovely readers might be surprised by the inclusion of lemons. I have never eaten a whole lemon but I do use the zest and the juice of this delicious citrus fruit. Slices added to a jug of water or a glass of gin and tonic will always enhance the experience, in my opinion.
I serve fresh wedges or slices of lemon with fish. I use the juice to make salad dressings and I cut lemons in half to stuff a chicken before roasting. Baking makes me happy and lemon is one of my preferred ingredients – lemon drizzle cake, lemon tarts, surprise lemon pudding. Need I go on?
If I’m in a pâtisserie or out for a meal, my cake or dessert of choice is likely to be lemon flavoured. Not forgetting a slice of lemon in a cup of Earl Grey tea. I imagine you’ve got the idea of my love for lemons…
I wonder which are your five most favourite fruits?

I also adore eating fruit. I think it would be difficult to put them in any order, depending on season but I particularly love cherries, nectarines, strawberries. Lemons (for the same reasons as you) and mango.

I also love lemons. Other fruits I like are blueberries, raspberries, persimmons, bananas, and nectarines.

Delicious choices, Darlene! We don’t often find persimmons in the UK, at least not where I live. Bonne journée!

You should come visit me in the Pacific Northwest. We have wild blackberries galore in August. 2 different kinds. And then there are marionberries…which are heavenly. But then, I’m sure the summer berries in France are très délicieux.

I should, Christine! When in the UK, we have blackberries at the start of autumn but I believe we only have one type. I’ve never heard of marionberries – I will research them! There are many delicious summer fruits, in France. I love them in a ‘tarte’! Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment.

I’m planning to be in France in September, so I’ll have to see what’s in season then.
– Our climate is also good for blueberries. Beautiful plants and the leaves turn red in the fall. We have a few plants in our yard and they do well, so with that in mind I planted 4 more last Fall. I found out this Spring that the new bushes are very enticing to wild rabbits, so the fledgling plants are now encased in not so lovely chicken wire!

September and October are two of the months I enjoy the most when I’m in France. You should be able to find some fabulous fruit, including one of my favourites – Mirabelle plums. Blueberries are delicious too! Thanks for taking the time to comment.

I don’t think I’ve ever tasted papaya, have to remedy that when I can!

Give me a strawberry, grapes or kiwis 🥝 and I will be your best friend. 😇

Love your comment but never too sure about kiwis. They look very pretty so I add them to fruit salads or use them to decorate cakes but I couldn’t eat a whole one!

I love lemons too, but I’m not so keen on oranges. I like blueberries and eat them all the time, I also like peaches and pears and nectarines.

I like blueberries too, even though they didn’t make my top 5. You can add them to porridge or yogurt, great for baking, too!
