Having visited Gran Canaria for over twenty-five years, you might be surprised that there is still more for us to learn about this stunning island.
I first wrote about Gran Canaria in 2022. It is part of a Spanish archipelago located off the northwest coast of Africa. In my post titled “Why visit Gran Canaria?” I outlined six reasons for staying and returning to this beautiful island: its favourable climate, easy accessibility, delicious cuisine, rich culture, diverse landscapes, and the wide variety of available activities.
We typically visit Gran Canaria in the winter, always in the south of the island, but our choice of accommodation varies. Sometimes, we opt for self-catering, at other times we choose hotels. Our most recent trip was particularly magical because we were joined by our eldest son and his wife, as well as our youngest son and his girlfriend.
This year, we stayed in the Lopesan Baobab Hotel, which has an African theme. Below is a selection of photos that capture the essence of our trip: blue skies, palm trees and plenty of relaxation! I feel privileged to have had such a wonderful week with the people I love the most.

It was, Marion. Perhaps you could visit the other Canary Islands too and write a post comparing and contrasting!

I visited Gran Canaria many times between 1988 and 2005. Back then, it was all about the nightlife for me, but I did get to see some great parts of the island. I always visited in March, as it seemed busy, and the temperatures back then didn’t affect me as much as they do now. It was always fun, and on one occasion, I exchanged stories with Jimmy Summerville over a few beers. He was pleased I didn’t react like many when seeing a famous person.

Gran Canaria is a very inclusive place; one of the reasons we like it so much. I love your Jimmy Summerville anecdote. Have you ever met the Rev. Richard Coles? Thanks for your comment, Hugh.

No, I’ve never met Richard, but he seems the type of person anyone could talk to, June. Maybe, one day, I’ll bump into him.

I quite agree, Hugh. He’s such a fantastic raconteur and would be a wonderful dinner party guest, I imagine!
