I have budgeted and been careful about money from an early age. I received weekly pocket money from my parents, but once I was old enough to get a part-time job, I did.
My first paid employment was having a paper round. I grew up in a village, so there weren’t many job opportunities. I also babysat for neighbour’s children, and when I was about sixteen, I worked as an au pair for a local family during the school holidays.
I wanted fashionable clothes and other extras, so I worked and saved.
As a student, I had various jobs, including shop work.
I have always had a strong work ethic, and the notion of being in debt scared me. Budgeting is second nature.
