It’s that time of year when we are treated to more outrageous, expensive and mind- boggling perfume adverts. I love perfume. I have written about my love of fragrance several times and this is not the first time that I have posted about perfume commercials.
I’m going to start with a Lancôme advert that I actually enjoy, well to be honest, I like the music! This advert was filmed in LA and features Zendaya but the song is ‘Unstoppable’ by Sia. There are several of her tracks that I love. Will this commercial encourage me to buy the Idôle perfume? No, because I have to sample a fragrance to know if I like it but maybe the power of advertising will mean that I have a quick squirt of Idôle next time I’m in a department store.
My second choice also features music that I like, this time by Dua Lipa, a London born, British singer. I like the name of the perfume but I have yet to actually sniff the fragrance! Apparently, its main notes are orange blossom and lavender. I like both of these but, of course, there are lots of other additions as well.
The commercial for the Yves Saint Laurent perfume ‘Black Opium’ stars Zoe Kravitz, daughter of Lenny. This advert does nothing for me in particular but I used to love the original Opium perfume, so I thought I would include it. It brings back memories of other overpowering perfumes with names such as Poison and Obsession.
Then we have Jennifer Lawrence starring in the advert for ‘Joy’ perfume. She is able to dive into a swimming pool, fully made up, and emerge looking stunning. If that was me, I would ressemble a panda, having a bad day, with black streaks running down my face and my hair in rats tails. The power of advertising!
Last, and definitely least in my opinion, is the Christmas Chanel No 5 advert. It stars Lily-Rose Depp who is the daughter of Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp. I don’t like the music and I find her acting is rather stilted. You may disagree, of course!
For the time being, I’m going to stick with ‘La Vie est Belle’ which I have been wearing for some time. When I’ve finished the bottle, I may well see if I can sniff out something new!!
You had me giggling at your “panda” comment. 😀 thank you for sharing this list of perfume ads – love this post!

My stepdaughter used to work in a Planet Parfum and reported that 99.99% of customers would come in to ask for “Jennifer Lawrence’s perfume” or “Zendaya’s perfume.” I asked whether such customers would at least take a sniff, or spray some on to see how it worked with their own body chemistry. Nope. It’s all about lining up with a certain celebrity. If you buy the perfume that Jennifer Lawrence hawks, then you somehow acquire some of her personality. Insanity. But obviously the perfume makers have chosen the right marketing method.

Fascinating! I imagined that people might be attracted to TRY a perfume because of the celebrity featured in an ad but I can’t believe that people actually purchase without, at the very least, having a sniff. As you say, the power of clever marketing.

Well done June, I’ve no idea who most of these celebs are unless they’re getting on a bit. (Julia Roberts, Charlize Theron) I agree, the Jennifer Lawrence ad is ridiculous. They’ve some nice Fragonard fragrances in M &S, might treat myself.

Treating yourself to a Fragonard fragrance sounds a very good idea! Joyeux Noël 🎄
