I read a lot about France. This can be via blogs, newspapers or magazines and in French or English, depending how lazy or busy I am! Some items, in particular, catch my attention. Perhaps because my love affair with France started in Paris, I have been following the story about the ‘Pont des Arts’ with some interest.
Pont des Arts love locks removed: 45 tons of padlocks were removed recently from the Pont des Arts Bridge, over the Seine, in Paris. ‘We still hope that Paris will remain the capital of love and romance’ said Bruno Julliard, the deputy mayor of Paris.
A railing even collapsed here, last year, under the weight of so many locks.
This fashion began in Paris in 2008 when couples started to proclaim their everlasting love by writing their initials or names on a padlock, attaching it to the bridge and throwing the keys into the River Seine. Here’s a clip (in English) about the events from Channel 4 news.
Here is a recent photo of the bridge, without the padlocks, taken by ‘Out and About in Paris’. Please follow the link below the photo if you want to see more fab photos of Paris or https://www.facebook.com/OutAndAboutInParis
What do you think about adding – or removing – symbolic padlocks from monuments? I’d love to know!
